leaf
There was a big thunder-and-lightning storm this weekend, with lots of wind. Apparently plenty of folks in the area lost power, but we did not. What we did lose was almost every single leaf from our trees.

We have a lot of raking to do.
Once again tonight I made myself a delicious dinner. I have to keep congratulating myself so that I'll continue to make the effort to actually cook. It really is worthwhile, which I tend to forget. Here we have mixed veggies, Morningstar fake steak (still not on their website), and rice noodles. Mmmm.

That looks delicious...who are you and what have you done with my sistra?
"I-want-a-piece-of-bread"
I know! It's wacky, me cooking and all. And I'm impressed that you think it looks delicious despite the fact that it's fake steak.
I still want a piece of bread. I've been thinking we should get a bread maker lately. Fresh baked bread sounds awesome!
I've never had a problem with fake meat items. Altough some are clearly better than others (Tofurky wasn't terribly appealing). But most of the fake hotdog/hamburger things I've had were pretty good, if a little on the dry side. But they have made them better every year. I would much rather have fake steak than all that fungus that was on your last dinner.
Way to go Anne! That does look tasty. I've never liked any of the fake meat products that I've tried. Some were worse than others, but there has never been one that I'd eat again on purpose. Tofu on the other hand is pretty good, probably because it's like a flavor sponge. Do you have any good tofu recipes or tried anything good with tofu in it? I keep meaning to make some tofu dishes at home. But I don't want to just make some chicken dish using tofu instead.

Yeah, Susan, I figgered you'd be grossed out by those mushrooms. :D
My favorite tofu recipes are those that are hot, hot, hot! I like curry tofu, szechuan tofu, etc. Also deep-fried tofu is verrry good. You can buy it in the refrigerated foods section, often near the organic stuff, already with the lovely deep-fried outer coating that is so tasty. The thing I've made with tofu is just stir-fry--some veggies, some tofu, some sauce. There's a brand of sauces I like that they have at Meijer but the brand name escapes me at the moment...they're in glass bottles and have black labels with jewel tone printing. Does that sound familiar?
And in general, fake meat stuff is hit or miss. Either good or horrible.
I have to recommend the LightLife Gimme Lean! soy sausage. It comes in a tube, just like real sausage, and it tastes wonderful. It's in with all of the tofu-type things in the grocery (at least it is at Kroger). Plus, you can feel wacky when you annouce that you're eating tubepork for dinner.
Thanks for the suggestion, whomever you are. I have to admit being sqeamish about sausage. The real thing grosses me out so much and I'm not sure I can get past that to eat a fake version. How would you characterize the taste?
I would charactarize the taste as...um...sausage-like? To be honest, I haven't actually eaten real sausage in over 5 years, so I'm going from memory. The taste, though, is fantastic-a mix of spices that make sausage oh-so-good. I like the taste better than the Morningstar patties and links, if that helps.
What I really like is the texture. Have you ever made a Morningstar patty in the microwave, only to have it turn out like a little rubber tire? These actually will cook like real sausage patties, so the texture also gets an 4.0 on a scale of 4.0.
I like it the best when cooked crumbled, with lettuce, salsa, and a bit of cheese for a little "south-of-the-border" feel. Or, you can use it in a killer wet burrito. Wear a sombrero and get crazy, then go break open a pinata!
They also sell a "ground meat" version that lacks the spices that is also pretty good. Try that first to see if you like it, then try the sausage. For what its worth-my advice.
I think I'm still afraid. I don't know what sausage tastes like, either, but I'm mega apprehensive. Thanks for the advice. If I get brave enough to try it, I'll make it known. :)
