oh the weather outside is frightful

And I wish it would stop snowing.

I haven't posted a knitting update lately because I'm working on a really big project - a blanket. I hope to be done in a few days, so keep yer eyes peeled.

We bought the dogs a new bed and it rocks. We tried to find one that would replicate the comfyness of the chair they used to be allowed on (we got rid of it to make room for the soon-to-be-here new furniture).

I turned on the fireplace for a couple hours earlier and they were so digging it.

Logan had to go in to have a wart removed, so for a few days she was FrankenPooch again:

Yesterday she got the staples removed and the doc said that she's healed really well. Yay!

The hair they had to shave around the area should grow back in soon.

In other news, it may be overplayed, but I can't get enough of drink, drink, drink.

Whale Talk update

Another articulate, intelligent piece from Chris Crutcher, in response to yet another letter to the editor.

shudder

When I was a kid an older woman from our church gave my sister and me an ancient edition of The Barbie Game, much to my mother's chagrin. We played it fanatically for awhile and then it mysteriously disappeared (later discovered stashed under my parents' bed). I can understand my mother's lack of enthusiasm for the game - it was extremely old-fashioned with all the classic gender roles as exaggerated as the vulva pink it was printed with. In my quest to find a wedding dress, I've been looking at lots of prom dress sites and stumbled upon this dress, which I believe is the same exact hideous dress Barbie wore as her 'fancy' number at the end of the game.

searchity

I'm on the lookout for vintage knitting patterns, especially those from the 1920s-1960s. Any suggestions? Please comment with links!

earworm

When we were kids, my sister used to torture me by saying, "blooooooodsuckerrrssss!" which would make me think of those creepy-crawly fuckers from The Wrath of Khan. At last, I've found something better to associate with the idea.

let's get it started

It's pretty common knowledge that the west side of the state tends to be pretty durn conservative, but every so often something happens that's just plain embarrassing. Chris Crutcher is one of the most genuine, perceptive, and unprejudiced people I've had the pleasure of meeting. Read his response.

Hands of Fate hat

I just finished the Hands of Fate hat (my own made-up pattern) using Manos del Uruguay in Flame (115 if memory serves, which it might do incorrectly). I used #4 needles and it took about 2/3 of one hank.

beer!

Last night was the Big Concert for CMU's Sibs Weekend, making it the second night in a row that K. and I were surrounded by people much, much younger than we are. People our age were allowed to buy tickets, whereas all the students and sibs got in free.

The show was really good. Lucky Boys Confusion opened with a 45-minute set and then Reel Big Fish played for something over an hour, which included a bunch of new songs. They've got a new album coming out April 5th. Woot!

I had K. take a few pics (being that he's a head above the crowd he's got a better perspective than I do) which turned out better than I expected (I wasn't expecting much).

Lucky Boys Confusion:

Reel Big Fish:

Karl trying to take a cute picture of us and me not realizing what was up till too late:

RBF did a sweet version of Enter Sandman that went on a lot longer than we expected, which rocked. It looks like the new album will have a fair number of covers and they played quite a few new originals, too. Definitely altogether sweet. I wish they'd get bands like RBF here more often.

bring the rock

Well, we brought it, but when we got there things didn't turn out quite as we'd hoped. When we arrived at the venue last night, they'd had a buttload of technical difficulties and everything was running way behind schedule. Also apparently the week before a bunch of nazi youth showed up at the venue and caused a ruckus so much of the regular crowd didn't come last night. We rocked anyway, though, and the guy running things was really gracious and apologetic about everything. The kids who did stay around (we were the last on) were very into it, too, which was cool.

I have to say, though, the entire night just made me feel really, really, really old. All the kids there were nice as far as I could tell, but they were literally half my age or thereabouts and some of 'em were young enough to be K's offspring (if he had any). The whole Starved Seventies look is really off-putting, too. My public service announcement to the gals there: if your thighs don't touch when you stand with your feet together, EAT MORE. I know it's not that simple, but damn. The mega tight pants don't do any favors for these kids who have such sticks for legs. No-touchers just weird me the fuck out.

K. tried to get some footage, but the lighting was weird and I don't think it'll come out well. Dan's roomie took some pics with my digital cam, so here are a few of those.

Oh, and one of the previous bands broke the third mic stand, so Dan had to make due with a precariously hanging/swinging mic suspended from the acoustic ceiling framework. I wish I could say that this is the first time this has happened, but unfortuantely I can't.
