YA for memes

All the authors of teen lit whose blogs I read seem to be doing this meme, and now I've read it enough times that I just can't resist.

1. FIRST NAME? Anne

2. ARE YOU NAMED AFTER ANYONE? Nope.

3. WHEN DID YOU LAST CRY? I can't remember. I almost cried two weeks ago when I got The Worst Haircut Ever. Which actually turned out to be not so utterly horrible once I had someone else fix it. (Yes, I was being very dramatic about my hair, which is obviously not something permanent and worth getting really upset about, but hair just matters.)

4. DO YOU LIKE YOUR HANDWRITING? Yes, I do. I was complimented on it by the very cool TA who taught my English 101 (and later, 201) class my first year of undergrad. She said "fuck-up" the first sentence she ever spoke to us, and we loved her for it.

5. WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE LUNCH MEAT? I don't eat actual meat, but there are some soy-based lunch "slices" that aren't a bad addition to a big sandwich. They aren't anything to crow about in terms of taste but they add something to the overall sandwich package.

6. KIDS? None for me, thanks, though I do enjoy working with 'em, and some of my friends have awesome ones I like to spend time with.

7. IF YOU WERE ANOTHER PERSON WOULD YOU BE FRIENDS WITH YOU? Yes, though I'm sure I'd wonder about myself sometimes.

8. DO YOU HAVE A JOURNAL? I have this blog and a seldom-used livejournal. I don't think I've regularly kept a real journal in at least ten years. I kept one all the time from 1985 until then, though.

9. DO YOU USE SARCASM A LOT? Yes.

10. DO YOU STILL HAVE YOUR TONSILS? Yes.

11. WOULD YOU BUNGEE JUMP? Possibly. I went skydiving once and that was quite a rush.

12. WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE CEREAL? Pops. (Did you know they're not called Corn Pops anymore?)

13. DO YOU UNTIE YOUR SHOES WHEN YOU TAKE THEM OFF? For my Chucks, yes. Most other shoes, no.

14. DO YOU THINK YOU ARE STRONG? Not in physical terms. I'm fairly dextrous, though, which for me seems more useful.

15. WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE ICE CREAM? Mint Chocolate Chip.

16. SHOE SIZE? 7ish

17. RED OR PINK? Red.

18. WHAT IS YOUR LEAST FAVORITE THING ABOUT YOURSELF? I have a tendency to get overzealous while chewing and nail the inside of my cheek.

19. WHO DO YOU MISS THE MOST? I haven't had much death in my life - just my grandparents, really. So them, I guess.

20. DO YOU WANT EVERYONE TO SEND THIS BACK TO YOU? I am sending it out via this blog, so I wouldn't mind seeing other people blog it.

21. WHAT COLOR OF PANTS AND SHOES ARE YOU WEARING
RIGHT NOW? Blue jeans and bare feet.

22. Who is your favorite writer/book/movie?
---Writer: Douglas Coupland ties with Francesca Lia Block
---Book: One of my favorites is Practical Magic by Alice Hoffman
---Movie: If I have to pick one, I'll go with Evil Dead

23, WHAT ARE YOU LISTENING TO RIGHT NOW? A show about workbenches on the DIY channel.

24. IF YOU WERE A CRAYON WHAT COLOR WOULD YOU BE? I was always fond of Periwinkle.

25. WHAT ARE YOUR FAVORITE SMELLS? Baking apples, autumn, the dogs when they're sleeping.

26. WHO WAS THE LAST PERSON YOU SPOKE ON THE PHONE WITH? Dave from work, I think.

27. THE FIRST THING YOU NOTICE ABOUT PEOPLE YOU ARE ATTRACTED TO? Eye contact.

28. DO YOU LIKE THE PERSON WHO SENT THIS TO YOU? No one sent it directly to me, but I am a big fan of the folks who completed it before me.

29. FAVORITE DRINK? Currently English Breakfast Tea with 2 sugars and a dollop of milk.

30. FAVORITE SPORT? I'm not much interested in sports. If I had to pick one to watch, I'd go for synchronized swimming.

31. HAIR COLOR? Brown with a few white hairs creeping in.

32. EYE COLOR? blue

33. DO YOU WEAR CONTACTS? not since I had LASIK

34. FAVORITE FOOD? cheese

35. SCARY MOVIES OR HAPPY ENDING? Both!

36. LAST MOVIE YOU WATCHED? I just rewatched Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire not too long ago.

37. COLOR OF SHIRT YOU ARE WEARING? Black.

38. WINTER OR SUMMER? winter

39. HUGS OR KISSES? Both!

40. FAVORITE DESSERT? My mom's apple pie.

41. WHO IS MOST LIKELY TO RESPOND? Susan, perhaps?

42. LEAST LIKELY TO RESPOND? ???

43. WHAT BOOKS ARE YOU READING? PopCo by Scarlett Thomas

44. WHAT IS ON YOUR MOUSE PAD? at work, this; at home, I don't use any mousepads

45. FAVORITE SOUNDS? Birds outside, the dogs sighing, water boiling in the kettle (no whistle).

46. WHAT DID YOU WATCH ON TV LAST NIGHT? Last night I was too tired and went to bed mega early (my excuse is that I have a cold.)

47. ROLLING STONES OR BEATLES? The Beatles.

48. THE FURTHEST YOU'VE BEEN FROM HOME? The Arctic Circle in Norway would be geographically furthest, I think. Culturally, Dresden in summer 1989.

49. DO YOU HAVE A SPECIAL TALENT? I like to think that I have many talents, but one is that I can pick things up with my toes.

50. WHEN AND WHERE WERE YOU BORN? 1974, Big Rapids, Michigan

close-up

This is a close-up of the scarf I've been half-heartedly working on lately. I've been so busy and distracted by other things that I haven't been devoting much time to knitting since we moved but I figger that'll change once the weather gets colder. I bought a bunch of great yarn while we were in Europe, so I've got a lot of fun projects to look forward to.

garden plans

front of house
Originally uploaded by annethelibrarian.
I'm trying to figure out a good plan for what to do with the yard/garden around our new house. Anyone who'd like to chime in with helpful ideas is encouraged to do so!

There are some unidentified plants thriving by the front door (see previous post) and there are some somewhat peed-on (thanks, Brodie) but probably still okay hastas and daylilies in the back yard, but that's about it for things that seem salvagable.

So far I've ordered the following bulbs for fall planting, but I've not yet decided where anything will go.

Breck's Late Spring Sampler Collection:
5 Parrot Tulip Mixture
4 Queen of Night Tulips
5 Hardy Glads Mixture
8 English Wood Hyacinth Mixture
10 Lavender Mountain Lilies
3 Asiatic Lily Mixture
8 Allium roseum
12 Tall Dutch Iris Mixture

Michigan Bulb:
Tulips, Mixed Super Bag
Wildflower Bulb Garden:
blue grape hyacinths
Snow Crocus Mix
Grecian Windflowers
Early Snow Glories
Early Stardrifts
Sow Winner Tulips
Hawera Daffodils
Iris Danfordiae

I'm not opposed to purchasing more bulbs to complement what I've got here already. I'd love to hear suggestions for additions and especially for where to put all of this.

mystery plants

So we have all these plants (for more, see the rest of this photo set) by our front door. I don't know what they are, but they seem to be of the multiplying-by-nature variety, and some of them are way too close to the house. I want to transplant some of them so that they aren't getting all squished by the brick. Garden mavens, when is the best time of year/day to do this transplanting? Also, what the hell are these things? Lilies?
