Hairspray trailer

Hairspray

The remake of Hairspray is getting closer to a theatre near you. The trailer is now available at the official movie site. I was a little resistant to the concept of remaking this cult classic but this trailer looks pretty sweet! I've seen the original countless times and I love the characters as played by those actors. I'm still holding a few reservations (can I really see past the Travolta-ness and believe him as Edna Turnblad?) but as of now, I'm cautiously optimistic.

Purple Wintercreeper
Originally uploaded by annethelibrarian.
It was beautiful again today and we spent some time in the yard during the morning. We planted the two dogwoods I got a few weeks ago (designed to eventually block the ugly back fence - we'll probably add more of them at some point) as well as the purple wintercreeper short shrubs. We "built" a pseudo-planter (just stuck a piece of cedar in the ground in front of the plants) around them. This is probably a temporary home for the plants but at least they're in the ground now and ready to grow.

sunny Saturday

After a week of rain, it finally got sunny midway through the day today. It was gorgeous! I edged the front lawn with the string trimmer - the edges of the lawn are seriously out of control, extending 2-6 inches onto the cement, and the entire lawn is at least 2 inches higher than the cement. We'll get it under control one of these days. I also pulled all the chickweed (not all, really, but what was visible that I could get - each time I pull it out, there's less of it) out of both the front and side gardens. Plenty of the flowers bloomed today, too, which I'd been waiting for - they were all budding out through all the rain during the week.

the very model of a modern major big butt

Fans of musical theatre and 80s pop rap may get a kick out of this reimagining of Sir Mix-a-lot's classic "Baby Got Back" in the tradition of Gilbert & Sullivan:

It's a little on the long side, but funny. Those who feel the need to cleanse the palate may wish to watch the original.

New Ned Vizzini

So, Ned Vizzini has a new book going, his first for grown-ups (rather than teens). He recently did a reading at KGB, and it's available for those who missed it:

From this excerpt, the book is definitely mucho grown-up-o (there's sex, and plenty of it in this bit). I'm intrigued by Ned's description of the protagonist, a "lapsed indie rocker."

Beige Mix

I still don't have a review of Beige by punkrockstar teenlit writer Cecil Castellucci. I like the book so much - it's hard to write about it without gushing, so it's taking me forever.

In the meantime, enjoy this mix put together by another punkrockstar teenlit writer, Francesca Lia Block.

stashbuster afghan

I haven't posted any knitting projects in quite awhile because I've been working on a really big project. I decided that I needed to clean up my stash and use as much yarn as I can before buying more. I had a boatload of purple yarn so I decided to make an afghan. It's purely garter stitch, with each color joining in when the previous ran out. I did add a crochet border (taught myself to crochet, finally!) to give it a more finished look. The afghan will be a gift for a friend's children.

Sad to say, I still have a LOT of yarn left, but I ended up buying just a little bit of new yarn to make a new project: the U Neck Vest from the Fall 2004 issue of Knit1. I'm a bit annoyed as the instructions aren't as clear as they could be, but I'm almost finished, so we'll see if it turns out or not.

poetry

I am, of course, none other than blank verse.
I don't know where I'm going, yes, quite right;
And when I get there (if I ever do)
I might not recognise it. So? Your point?
Why should I have a destination set?
I'm relatively happy as I am,
And wouldn't want to be forever aimed
Towards some future path or special goal.
It's not to do with laziness, as such.
It's just that one the whole I'd rather not
Be bothered - so I drift contentedly;
An underrated way of life, I find.

When You Were Little

When I was little...

1. My obsession was: I can't remember having an obsession. Fam, any ideas?

2. My favorite TV show was: Buck Rogers, Dukes of Hazzard, The Muppet Show

3. My favorite book was: the Anastasia books by Lois Lowry, From the Mixed-Up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler, The Mysterious Disappearance of Leon (I Mean Noel) by Ellen Raskin

4. My favorite movie was: Back to the Future, Grease, Star Wars

5. My favorite food was: homemade applesauce

6. My LEAST favorite food was: green peas, milk

7. My favorite stuffed animal was: Sir Froggio, who lost his arm in the war (actually, it was felt and it got caught under the cot my sister was sleeping on, and when I pulled him, it came out. He was not well-constructed).

8. My favorite color was: When I was a kid, blue.

9. My favorite thing about school/preschool was: when the teache read us chapter books out loud.

10. My favorite game was: Monopoly.

11. My favorite toy was: Legos, Barbies, or my bike.

12. My best friend was: Amanda, Jill, and Kara.

13. My worst enemy was: I don't think I had any.

14. My "boyfriend"/"girlfriend" was: A kid who rode my bus who had a Fox and the Hound lunchbox. He moved away and I have no idea what his name was. We totally sat next to each other for at least a week, though.

15. My teacher's name was: Always what I thought it would be, as my school was small.

16. The name I called my mom was: Mom

17. The name I called my dad was: Dad

18. Another grown up in my life was: my next-door neighbors' parents

19. My favorite thing to pretend was: That we (neighborhood kids) were a biker gang and we'd ride through the woods, hitting little jumps we made. We also wore those sweet 80s puffy-coat vests, so we felt like we looked sort of Charlie's Angels-esque.

20. I was scared of: Mr. Spock, but only when I was asleep. Outside of dreams, he was fine.

And the bonus question...

What did you want to be when you grew up? Fashion designer, chef, writer, singer, dancer, and lots more.

The Bachelor

So, I'm sick. I have a stupid headcold that keeps alternating between feeling like it's almost over and feeling like it's getting worse. Bleh.

In other news, the latest season of The Bachelor started airing this week. This time the guy in question is Andy Baldwin, a Navy doctor and is just as generic as the previous bachelors: he's tan, outdoorsy, and has no discernable personality.

Chris Harrison has got to be so friggin' weary at this point.

The ladies are the usual bunch of look-alikes, and, true to form, only the crazy ones really make an impression. There's Britney Spears, who got drunk and fell off a barstool before nearly getting in a fight with Blatantly Crazy Chick; Crazy Eyes, who I pegged at the get-go as this year's My Eggs Are Rotting but who turned out to be merely minor-league nutsy; and Mediocre Singing Patriot, who actually managed to get a rose despite her lackluster rendition of the National Anthem. The rest of them pretty much blurred together for me. One of the blonde ones did a crazy backflip, and two of the others baked a cake using tequila instead of eggs (yes, it was an unholy mess), but less than 24 hours after viewing, I couldn't pick them out on the Bachelor site.

Cheers! Here's to another season of the purest crap unscripted TV has to offer.
