been a long time

Busy Manchester Mosaic Bee
Originally uploaded by dullhunk
Wow! I've been so busy the past few weeks I've barely had time to blog. The end of summer reading program was mega overwhelming and it's taking me awhile to recover. This weekend I got out in the garden for just a little while and cut down some of the dead/dying stuff including the British wonder peas and the crookneck squash plants. I'd already cut down the spent cucumber plants a week or two ago. We've got some major weed issues in the back of the yard as well as in all the flower beds, so I've still got some work ahead of me there, but I'm looking forward to spending some more time outside.

Linear B

Your Score: Linear B

You scored

You are Linear B. Even those who can follow you think you're all Greek to them. Which, after all, is true - Linear B being the first known text for written Greek. To most people, you're incomprehensible. But what do you care? You're tough, hard, long-enduring and have greater nobility than most. Naturally, you don't admit to borrowing extensively from your brother Linear A.

gardeny goodness

The garden is going great guns with all the heat we've had lately. Today I picked the rest of the carrots and a bunch of cukes that were ready to go, and after I washed them K arranged them so lovely-ly. Yummers!

Butterfly Garden

Butterfly Garden

There aren't (m)any Xbox games that I'm interested in, but I just read a report about a new one that might change my previous disinterest in the system: Butterfly Garden. There's not much info out there yet but it seems that in the game, the player will create a garden and breed butterflies. Doesn't sound too exciting, but neither does Animal Crossing and I'm a huge AC fan. There are some screenshots here and interview with one of the people behind the game here. It's set to come out sometime this year or next.

I'm a big fan of Wes Anderson's movies. Few filmmakers create worlds so elaborate, unique, and inviting, and Anderson does it completely every time (the Coen Brothers also come to mind). His new movie, The Darjeeling Limited, is coming this fall and looks very promising. The trailer is here.

8 College Things

Running C

1. I did my undergrad at Central Michigan University.

2. I was in marching band (Let's go, Fire up Chips!) my first three years. I played F-Alto (marching band version of french horn), the redheaded stepchild of the marching band family.

3. I didn't decide on a major until about three years in and upon hitting my final semester (student teaching), promptly decided that I didn't really want to be a teacher after all. This turned out to be one of the best decisions I've made, as I love my current career more than I could've imagined.

4. My first two years, I lived in Barnes Hall, the dorm where all the artsy people roomed. Barnes is attached to what was then the music building, and the basement of the dorm was filled with 'sound-proof' practice cubicles we affectionately called the Looney Bins. They saw more action from couples trying to find some, er, privacy, than they did from music students practicing. (Yes, eww.)

5. For a short while I worked in the Cataloging department of the university library, comparing the old catalog cards to the fairly recently created electronic versions. The goal of this was to make sure the electronic version was correct before getting rid of the paper cards for good. Unfortunately for all us work study students, as soon as we efficiently completed this project, the cataloging department was outsourced and our jobs disappeared along with the old wooden card catalog.

6. My college boyfriend (now one of my best friends) had a sweet grunge band called Occasional Tables, and they had quite a little following in Mount P.

7. After my library job ended I got a job as a hanger and occasional sorter at Goodwill. This meant that I put clothing on hangers and priced them before they went out on the sales floor. The best part of the job (which was pretty cushy anyway) was the employee discount (20% off a $3.99 coffee table? Done!). It was also hilarious to hear sorority girls shopping for grunge-era accessories: two came in once looking for some flannel shirts and girl A was disappointed that there weren't any in her size, until girl B reminded her that it only needed to look cute wrapped around her waist (not like she'd actually wear the thing).

8. One of the used cars I drove in college was a mid-80s Buick, a former Mary Kay car that had been repainted black. As it got older, the black paint chipped off in small bits, leaving the car looking like it had leprosy or something as the pink paint showed through.
