The ultimate in whimsy

There once was a Very Sad Tree in Seattle. In the fullness of summer it sported just a few meager leaves and when winter rolled around...forget about it. So, this poor pitiful tree needed some love, and a kindly neighbor named Erika was compelled to give it. I absolutely cannot look at this picture and not smile. She provides the pattern on her blog, so if you feel so inclined you too, can share some love with a Very Sad Tree in your area. She also has a hat that speaks binary, and through her site I found the perfect thing for all you zombie knitters.

I think that I will never see,
A sight as sad as that small tree.

A tree whose tiny trunk is pressed,
Into a sweater (not a vest).

The tree seems warm and kind of gay,
And likely will die anyway;

The tree now needs some Summer wear,
Some swim trunks? Can you knit a pair?

The tree has sure seen better days,
But Erika helped in a small way.

Such poems are made by jerks like me,
But only knitters would dress a tree.

(With my most abject apologies to Joyce Kilmer.)

The geek in me really likes the binary hat. Using checksums at either end is a nice touch...

I thought the checksums were the coup de grace myself. By including that she really cemented her awesome geekitude.
