Let there be light
I'm feeling a little frustrated at the moment. When Anne originally found Etsy I was super excited about it. A whole community of other crafty minded people like myself. But as time goes on it gets more and more obvious that people have taken it to the next level. The most recent evidence of this are the pictures. On the front page of Etsy they put some hand picked items from different sellers. However, when I look at those items I'm intimidated because of the production value. I also keep searching around just looking at random stuff ('cause its fun) and again I see pictures that are clearly well thought out and staged. It makes me feel like my items aren't well made enough to be sold and that my pictures are terrible.
I just finished a new project that I was all geeked about, but now that I finished taking some pictures and uploading them I just feel disappointed.

Don't be! The only thing really is lighting. You need it coming from two angles not just the one and it needs to be bright but coming through something which diffuses the glare. I'm currently experimenting with hanging sheets in front of some really bright lamps and getting good results.
Another tip from a friend was for small stuff, he has a large, white/cream fabric covered lampshade which he's cut a hole in the front of for the lens to go through. The item is put inside. The bright lamps are diffused by the lampshade and it gives a pretty cool round edge at the back.
You could also hang the background further away, so that it drops down the back and curves out onto the floor. That way there's no edge where the wall/floor meet and if you aren't actually touching it with the purse then it doesn't crinkle and give shadows.
The purse is really cute, by the way!
Indeed, don't fret! The purse looks super cute! and you're like *this close* to having the type of professional looking photos you're talking about. I think Dr. J's tips are perfect. Most of what I've seen says to light the crap out of it. You can get bright lights at Home Depot/similar and shine it through a sheet - probably the whole deal for less than $25. You can do it!! :D
Thanks, I'm sure it will all feel better tomorrow. Of course the day I wanted to take pictures it was all cloudy and dark (Sunshine State my foot).
Thanks for the tips Dr. J! I like that lampshade idea. Maybe while I'm up visiting my fam in Michigan I will rope my Dad into helping me construct something :)
